Mighty Joe Young (1949)

 In Harryhausen

Mighty Joe Young was a straightforward build. It is a solid piece of resin so it is quite hefty. No base came with the kit so a wood base was cut with a jigsaw and coated with sculptamold and textured. After drying the surface was painted. Dried plant material was dipped into matte medium, patted dry, and placed next to the dirt cropping. Railroad grass was planted around the base.

This diorama scene depicted in the film with Joe holding the cowboy by the leg occurs in a dry savannah area which is why the terrain is dry with bushes and tall grass. The facial expression on the cowboy is simplistic in keeping with the actual stop-motion puppet seen in the film.
